Saying Goodbye

like an old shoe,
you tossed him down
didn't stop to see
where he fell on the ground
you packed your bags
and drove away
said that you could never stay
you needed your fun
you had to run
you couldn't take the pain of everyday life
didn't want to be a wife
don't call, don't write
I'm gone, that's right
slowly he crawled until he could walk
and every day he stopped
just to talk
friendship grew
before I thought
before I knew
I began to depend on the warmth
from his heart
He brought with him a peace
I'd never known
a contentment, a joy,
never feeling alone
I knew his thoughts
before he could speak
could reach into his heart
and feel it beat
without uttering a word
without making a sound
we could talk across distance
across trouble
and time
and I knew that he'd stolen
the soul I called mine
today I send him home to you
not because I don't love him
it's the right thing to do
and for every joy
he brought to my life
for every lesson
I learned by his side
I am thankful forever
The Lord sent a guide
no need to worry
your man, he was true
Please love him forever
and care for his heart
be his friend
share his life
see his goodness
be his wife
listen to his words
touch his face
let the fire of your troubles
meld you like steel
and be thankful
as he turned to go
he only stumbled
he never fell
but, take care with his heart
because I love him too
